Family Sunday with Charlotte Dematons!

On March 26, it's family Sunday and party time at the Museum of Education: children's book illustrator Charlotte Dematons is coming to the museum!

Charlotte Maria Delphine (Charlotte) Dematons(Évreux, September 21, 1957) is a Dutch children's book illustrator.

Raised in France (with a French father and a Dutch mother), she came to the Netherlands after high school. After graduating from the Rietveld Academy in 1982, she was approached by Uitgeverij Lemniscaat, after which her first own picture book, entitled Dido, soon appeared. Since then, an estimated 150 titles followed, on which she (co)worked. Dematons has won several awards, including a Golden Brush in 2008, for her (textless) picture book Sinterklaas. In 2006, she already received a Silver Brush for the illustrations for the edition of Grimm's fairy tales (this book also received the Silver Griffel).

Dematons' drawings are characterized by the details, which often tell a story in themselves. This is very clear in the aforementioned Sinterklaas, but also in Bicycle and the - also award-winning - The Yellow Balloon. Another important feature of her illustrations is the fairy-tale atmosphere, which she creates by combining her realistic observations with beautiful use of color and little jokes.[source?] Her textless picture book Alphabet (2020) spent weeks in the top 10 of the Bestseller60.

Dematons provided illustrations for several world classics. In 2005 Grimm was published, in 2016 an adaptation of Hector Malot's classic Alone on the World (adaptation Tiny Fisscher) and in 2021 Black Beauty by Anna Sewell in an adaptation by Natasza Tardio.

Would you like to know how Charlotte makes all those beautiful drawings and books or would you like to tell her something? Then come to the Letterbos (in the exhibition tree rose fish) at 1:30 pm and find a nice spot. Until about 2 p.m. Charlotte will answer (almost) all your questions!
