A nocturnal ramble through Rotterdam with your Totem animal
Family film from Rotterdam.
11-year-old Ama(Amani-Jean Philippe) has lived in Rotterdam with her family all her life. The government thinks they should go back to Senegal, but Ama feels completely Dutch. She is an avid swimmer and together with her best friend Thijs(Ole van Hoogdalem) she spends many hours in the pool. She dreams of one day becoming as good as Ranomi Kromowidjojo. One night, her mother and little brother Abi are arrested. Ama manages to stay out of the hands of the police and goes in search of her father, who is on night shift. Thus begins her ramble through Rotterdam, where she is unexpectedly joined by a giant porcupine. With the help of the mysterious Kouyaté, a spiritual storyteller, Ama learns more about her Senegalese roots and about Totem. This is her totem animal - her protector and guide - who has been trying to tell her something all along. Meanwhile, Thijs takes action and, together with his classmates, does everything he can to get the family to stay in the Netherlands.
