Dutch Oscar entry styles grieving.
A close-knit family is disrupted when the father John(Fedja van Huet) fails to surface during a professional dive. No funeral, no goodbye, just a house full of memories. Bothered by the intangible loss, Merel(Thekla Reuten) evades her husband's death and everything related to it. As a result, her young children Boris and Ronja get caught up in their search for answers. The family comes to a hard stop. Merel has no choice but to face the loss in her own unique way. Will she succeed in starting a new life together again?
Director Martijn de Jong delivers a strong feature debut. He lets all disciplines flow together beautifully to give grief processing all the attention it deserves. Thekla Reuten recently won a Golden Calf for her leading role and the film is the NL entry for the upcoming Oscars.
The Volkskrant: "...the film believes in itself unconditionally.... "
