Tree, rose, fish

Fri Dec. 9, 2022 - Sat Aug. 31, 2024

Exposition on learning to read and enjoy reading.

Change your life, read a book!
Reading is a very special skill: once you can do it, you will never be able to not read. And that's a good thing, because reading changes your life.

Reading is important to function in society. Yet reading skills among young people are declining. And that is a shame, because reading is not only special and important, but above all great fun! The exhibition 'boom roos vis, over leren lezen en leesplezier' (tree rose fish, about learning to read and the pleasure of reading) therefore pays plenty of attention to learning to read - and continuing to read!

Caesarius Mommers, 'the reading father of the Netherlands'
In the exhibition, Brother Caesarius Mommers, 'the reading father of the Netherlands', talks about the development of reading education in the Netherlands. He takes the visitor into his story about Veilig leren lezen the reading method that once began with the iconic triptych 'boom roos vis'. In an interactive way, visitors discover the answers to questions such as "how do we learn to read?" "how special is it that we actually read?" and "how important is it that we keep reading?

Escape from The Creepy Bus!
The exhibition focuses on reading pleasure. There is plenty to experience. In a real Forest of Letters, children are invited and challenged to play with letters and dive into a fantasy world. In the forest of life-size illustrations, everyone can read, be read to, discover books, participate in a next-level scavenger hunt and, to top it off, try to escape from The Creepy Bus escaperoom.

Extensive educational program
This exhibition includes an extensive educational program for primary and secondary schools and vocational schools. Look for the complete offer under Education or make a choice between educational programs for primary education, secondary education, college/university education or adults. The 'tree rose fish' programs are clearly recognizable by the exhibition logo.

Target groups
The exhibition will appeal to a broad target group: from children and their (grand-) parents, to teachers, PABO students, educators and everyone who cares about reading in the Netherlands. The exhibition also has a rich educational program, extensive peripheral programming and surprising vacation programming.

In this video made during the announcement of the exhibition on Oct. 6, Petra Reijnhoudt talks about the background of this special, new exhibition.

Background
Recent studies show that the reading level of Dutch youth continues to decline. With this exhibition we will stimulate the pleasure of reading among young and old and raise awareness of the importance of reading. In addition, we will show the development of reading education using the most widely used reading method in the Netherlands: Veilig Leren Lezen. A fringe program has been put together in cooperation with Stichting Voorlezen.

This exhibition is made possible with financial support from various funds, for which we are very grateful.

Please note! The museum is closed on Mondays and open from 11 a.m. on Sundays.
