For three days, music fills every corner of the city center. In squares, along the waterfront, on outdoor patios, and among the historic buildings, thousands of visitors come together during Big Rivers. What once began with a single stage and a single band has grown into one of the largest free festivals in the Netherlands.
On July 10, 11, and 12, there will be more than 150 performances spread across 15 stages. From tribute bands, choirs, and musical acts to jazz, blues, pop, and rock: there’s always something to suit your taste. This year, the festival is once again surprising visitors with new features, including a stage on the Bomkade, intimate “2 Meter Sessions,” and the Big Disco on Saturday evening in the garden of the Grote Kerk. But according to Liselotte Gatzen, Big Rivers is about more than just music. “It’s much more than just music. It truly brings the city together.”
Anyone walking through the city during Big Rivers will see colorful beaded necklaces everywhere. This tradition stems from Mardi Gras in New Orleans, the festival’s source of inspiration. The necklaces are bought, traded, and given away to friends and strangers alike. It’s a small gesture that perfectly captures what Big Rivers is all about: celebrating together and making new connections.
Behind the scenes, more than 165 volunteers make sure everything runs smoothly. Together, they form a close-knit festival family that turns Big Rivers into a celebration year after year.
Some visitors come to see their favorite artist, while others meet up with old friends or let themselves be surprised by whatever they come across along the way. Whatever the reason, Big Rivers brings the city together!
