Your Adventure in Nature

Dordrecht is a green city surrounded by nature. De Biesbosch National Park lies on the outskirts of the city, and the Nieuwe Dordtse Biesbosch also brings water, reeds, and open space right up to the residential neighborhoods. The Island of Dordrecht is situated between the Oude Maas, the Beneden Merwede, and the Noord. Here, you can enjoy peace and quiet, rivers, and vast natural landscapes in every season, just a short distance from downtown.

In Dordrecht, nature visibly changes with the seasons. In the spring, parks and riverbanks turn a fresh shade of green, and De Biesbosch National Park comes to life. Summer invites you to spend long days outdoors, close to the water. In the fall, the forests and polders along the island take on warm hues. In the winter, fog hangs over the rivers, and tranquility returns to the landscape. Each season reveals a different side of nature in Dordrecht.

Biesbosch National Park

On the outskirts of Dordrecht lies De Biesbosch National Park, a vast freshwater tidal area where rivers shape the landscape. Creeks wind their way through willow forests and reed beds that ebb and flow with the tides. Beavers build their lodges here, and with a little luck, you might spot a bald eagle soaring above the water. From the Eiland van Dordrecht, you’ll find yourself in the heart of this natural landscape within minutes. Here, you’ll experience a sense of space, tranquility, and the power of the water. Want to learn everything there is to know about the Biesbosch? Then pay a visit to the Biesbosch Center.

Go on an adventure with the Vlot family and take the audio tour along the boardwalks.

New Dordrecht Biesbosch Nature Reserve (2)

"Nieuwe Dordtse Biesbosch"

The Nieuwe Dordtse Biesbosch is located on the outskirts of the city and brings nature close to home. This young nature reserve connects residential neighborhoods with water, reed beds, and open polders. Here you’ll find ponds, bird-rich shores, and sweeping views of the landscape of the Eiland van Dordrecht. The area grows and evolves with the seasons. Here you can experience peace and space, just a short distance from downtown. And if you want to explore nature in an active way, grab your skates and roll out into nature. There are two skating routes (the blue route, 10 km, and the red route, 20 km, marked with signs) that take you through this beautiful nature reserve.

Nature in the Heart of the City

Dordrecht’s city center has a number of beautiful, historic city parks, such as Park Merwestein and Wantijpark. Here you’ll find plenty of greenery, right in the heart of the city. They’re great places to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown for a while. You can take a leisurely stroll, find a bench, or just sit for a while and take in your surroundings. It’s especially lovely on sunny days, with people relaxing, reading, or having picnics. But even during quieter moments, the parks offer a pleasant, almost serene atmosphere. What makes these places special is the combination of history and nature. You’re right in the heart of a historic city, yet the greenery feels like a little oasis.
