Summer in the City

A sunny terrace by the water, a refreshing cocktail in your hand, and historic harbors as the backdrop. In Dordrecht, you don’t have to travel far to experience that ultimate summer feeling. Enjoy mussels at the Groothoofd, go stand-up paddleboarding through the city center, or take a boat ride through the Biesbosch. Choose an afternoon on the water or a long summer evening on a terrace. Everywhere you look, you’ll find a terrace, activity, or viewpoint that invites you to linger a while. These are the spots and activities that will make your summer in Dordrecht complete.

Mussels with a view of the harbor

As soon as summer arrives, there’s nothing better than enjoying a pan of fresh Zeeland mussels on a sunny terrace. At Finn’s, you can do just that at one of Dordrecht’s most beautiful locations, with a view of the historic harbors and the Grote Kerk. Here, everything revolves around the season. After asparagus season, the mussels make their annual return to the menu. You can choose from various preparations, including a classic version with wine, a version with beer, and a surprising seasonal special with an extra kick.

According to Regard Reuser, it’s mainly the combination of the view of the harbor and the relaxed atmosphere that makes Finn’s so unique. “It’s a place where you can just sit back and feel like you’re on vacation.” With a good glass of white wine and a table by the water, an evening at Finn’s instantly feels like summer!

Cocktails with a View

Looking for that ultimate vacation vibe in Dordrecht? Settle in on the terrace at Kade 32 and enjoy a cocktail with a view of the historic harbors. The terrace is a favorite spot for both Dordrecht residents and visitors from out of town. It’s no wonder—no matter where you sit, you’ll be looking out over a beautiful part of Dordrecht. According to Nick Bolte, the view feels like “a postcard, but in real life.”

You’re welcome to stop by any time of day for a bite to eat, a drink, or a cozy get-together by the water. A must-try this summer is the Kade 32 Spritz with passion fruit and sparkling wine. So whether you’re looking for lunch, drinks, or a cocktail in the sun, this is always the place to be.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding in the Harbors

Dordrecht’s historic harbors, picturesque canals, and hidden corners take on a whole new look when viewed from the water. With a SUP from Happy Boats, you can explore the city in a peaceful yet active way. A major advantage is that you can easily take the SUP with you—you decide where to head out onto the water. Choose a trip through the city center or take your board toward the Biesbosch, where you can experience nature up close among narrow creeks and green banks.

According to Mark Lansbergen, experience isn’t a factor. Virtually anyone can learn. “We want everyone to leave with a smile.” It’s precisely that combination of relaxation, exercise, and freedom that makes a SUP trip so much fun. You’re out in the fresh air, staying active, and seeing Dordrecht from a completely new perspective. It’s the perfect activity for a sunny summer day.

Paddling Through Nature

Looking to cool off on hot summer days? Hop into a canoe at DRIJF and explore the Biesbosch from the water. As you paddle through the reeds and hear birds singing all around you, it feels like you’ve completely escaped the hustle and bustle for a moment.

From the DRIJF location at Stayokay, you can explore the Biesbosch from the water. The landscape is constantly changing with the tides, making every trip unique. If you’d like to start from a different location, you can also visit the Biesbosch Center in Dordrecht to rent canoes.

According to Jacob van Poppel, that ever-changing landscape is exactly what makes the Biesbosch so surprising. “What makes the Biesbosch unique is that it can change right before your eyes.” For the best experience, he recommends setting out early. That way, you can hear the birds waking up and experience the tranquility of the Biesbosch at its best.

Explore the Biesbosch on Your Own

Renting an electric boat is perhaps the quietest way to explore the Biesbosch. Even without a boating license, you can navigate through creeks, past small islands, and right through one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands.

From the Biesbosch Center in Dordrecht, you can hop right on board. With a map in hand, you decide where the trip will take you. Bring some snacks for the ride and enjoy a relaxed day on the water.

This summer, there’s also something extra to look forward to. “Right now, there’s a good chance you’ll spot an osprey,” says Sanne van Rijn. Birds and other animals are especially easy to spot early in the morning or later in the day. Because the electric boat is virtually silent, you can experience nature up close. Highly recommended for families, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of the day.
