A tidal wave of zest for life

Sat, Sept. 5, 2026 – Sun, Jan. 10, 2027

Paintings by Hend Samir

Hend Samir (Kuwait, 1986) paints with fine brushes and brushes as large as brooms. She almost disappears into her paintings, which undulate loosely across the floor of her studio, becoming one with the fluidity of the paint. With varying speeds and pauses in her brushwork, she brings figures to life from many layers of color: mothers and toddlers, animals, musicians, and lovers. A group of children flies toward us: toward freedom!

Hend Samir lives in Amsterdam. She grew up in Egypt, where the Revolution erupted in Cairo in 2011, coinciding with her quest for feminine and artistic freedom. With infectious passion, she paints both the human struggle and the drama of life. Samir lets the paint shimmer on its own, as if in a sea of stories.

A Tidal Wave of Joy is Samir’s first solo museum exhibition worldwide. This retrospective features early paintings alongside his expansive mature work, which was honored with the Royal Prize in 2021. It also includes brand-new canvases, ranging from intimate scenes to dynamic vistas, full of promise for the future.
