Did you know that the first significant step toward Dutch independence was taken at the Hof van Nederland in 1572? This is the place where, on July 19, 1572, at the start of the Eighty Years’ War, twelve mayors of cities in Holland and several nobles gathered for a secret meeting. This meeting is known as the First Assembly of the Free States.
At this meeting, collective agreements were reached for the first time between the rebellious Dutch cities, the nobility, and Prince William of Orange. Freedom of religion was also discussed for the first time. These agreements are regarded as a significant moment in Dutch history, as they laid the foundation for cooperation between the States and the stadtholder that would ultimately lead to the establishment of an independent Dutch republic.
