The Matangi Quartet, a regular guest at Villa Augustus, is one of the most versatile string quartets in the Netherlands.
For more than twenty years, the Matangis have been moving effortlessly between classical repertoire, contemporary music, world music, jazz, and pop.
The “Mozartiade” program focuses on Mozart’s irresistible lightness and playfulness, as well as the surprising ways in which his music has continued to inspire and resonate throughout the centuries.
Mozart’s String Quartet No. 17 in B-flat major, K. 458, better known as “The Hunt,” is a combination of elegant melodies, playful dialogues, and subtle mastery. “In Re Don Giovanni,” a characteristic minimalist work by Michael Nyman, is based on a short passage from Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni; it is both a tribute and a radical reinterpretation.
The concert will conclude with Mozart’s String Quintet in G minor, K. 516, featuring violist Roeland Jagers. This masterpiece reveals the composer’s deeper, melancholic side.
