A musical journey through time on Sunday afternoon, October 18, at Muziekpodium DJS. The afternoon will feature One for the Road, a unique quintet of consummate musicians whose roots run deep in the legendary jazz scenes of Rotterdam and Dordrecht.
The gentlemen of One for the Road need no introduction; they’ve known each other since the turbulent ’60s and ’70s. Back then, they made their mark on renowned groups and orchestras such as the Rijnmond Sextet, Misty and the Sunday Evening Orchestra, and the Barend Petersen Quartet. In the 1970s, they also won prestigious first prizes at the Laren Jazz Festival with Jazzeker and Sessie Bon. Later, they reunited in groups such as Kiss Me Kate (Inter Amicos) and the well-known Dordts Jazz Quartet.
After many musical adventures, these gentlemen are back together again. Under the name One for the Road, they present a beautiful, varied repertoire that is as broad as it is surprising. Get ready for a journey that flows seamlessly from the timeless American Songbook classics of Cole Porter to the lyrical modern jazz of Bill Frisell, and from the steamy hard bop of Hank Mobley to the funky grooves of Herbie Hancock.
Lineup: Johan van den Ban – clarinet, Jaap Schallenberg – guitar, Bert Arends – piano, Erwin Huigen – double bass, Henk Scheepstra – percussion.
Admission is completely free!
