Open Beekeeping Day: The Secret of the Hexagon

Sat, July 11, 2026

The 2026 National Open Beekeeping Days will take place on the weekend of July 11 and 12. Beekeepers across the country will open their doors to the public on those days. The Weizigt Apiary will be open to the public on July 11.

The Secret of the Hexagon

This year's theme is "The Secret of the Hexagon." Nature always strives to use energy, materials, and space as efficiently as possible. A great example of this is the hexagonal honeycomb. The combs are made of wax and consist of a large number of cells that can serve different functions.

Activities

There are all kinds of fun activities related to bees and honeycombs.

  • Beekeeper Theo will be there to talk about the honeycomb. You’ll get answers to questions like: How is the honeycomb made? Why are the cells hexagonal? And what roles does the honeycomb play in the bee colony?
  • Dancing like a bee: Kids can join in on the bee dance with guest instructors from SOC.
  • Painting of a bee: Children paint bees and stamp a honeycomb next to them.
  • Beehive Weaving Demonstration: Weaving a beehive is an ancient craft. Mr. Vogelaar demonstrates this ancient craft to visitors.

Organic Beekeeping

At Weizigt, we have made a conscious choice to practice ecological beekeeping. In the Bee House, we’ll show you what ecological beekeeping entails and how it differs from conventional beekeeping. We’ll also teach you why pollinators are indispensable. The focus of our educational program is on what we ourselves can do to improve the habitat of pollinators—for example, by designing our gardens so that plants bloom year-round.
