Wander through 800 years of history for free

During the VriendenLoterij Open Monument Day on Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13, you can visit Hof van Nederland completely free of charge. Wander through the centuries-old Hof, discover the stories that have unfolded here, and enjoy music by Emma van Dobben.

Stand where history was made

For centuries, the Hof was the scene of events that were significant for both Dordrecht and the Netherlands. One of the most important events took place in 1572. Representatives from various cities in Holland gathered secretly at the Hof for the First Assembly of the Free States. This assembly marked a pivotal moment in the Revolt against the Spanish king and in the development of Dutch freedom and independence. The historic hall where the assembly took place still exists today. So during your visit, you’ll literally be standing on the spot where history was made.

Discover the stories of Dordrecht

At the Hof, you’ll discover—through stories from Dordrecht—how people have dealt with freedom and civil liberties over the centuries. Artifacts, films, audio, virtual display cases, and digital archival books bring the past to life. In addition to the First Free States Assembly, you’ll learn about other defining events in Dordrecht’s history, such as the Saint Elizabeth’s Flood and the Synod of Dordrecht.

Come visit, wander through the halls, and discover history right where it actually took place.
