Discover colonial stories from Suriname and the Caribbean in modern-day Dordrecht
A little sugar in the coffee. Nothing out of the ordinary, right? Many things we now take for granted stem from our colonial past. In the exhibition Interwoven Past , you’ll discover through personal video portraits how the colonial past in Suriname and the Caribbean continues to influence present-day Dordrecht.
From Peggy Bouva, a descendant of a family that was enslaved, to Mayor Nanning Mol: each video portrait offers a unique perspective. Sidney Breidel, Glenda van Duivenvoorde, Péris Conrad, Jochem Sprenger, and Delice Abad also share their experiences. Together, these stories make it clear that this past is not far away, but is intertwined with the city in which we live together.
The exhibition is inspired by recent research (2025) on Dordrecht’s history of slavery and the lives of Black residents of Dordrecht. This research was conducted by Dr. Karwan Fatah-Black, Ramona Negrón, Nikita Krouwel, and Rowan van der Stelt, commissioned by the City of Dordrecht.
