Discover colonial stories from Suriname and the Caribbean in modern-day Dordrecht
Een beetje suiker in de koffie. Heel gewoon, toch? Veel dingen die we nu normaal vinden, komen voort uit ons koloniale verleden. In de tentoonstelling Verweven Verleden ontdek je via persoonlijke videoportretten hoe het koloniale verleden in Suriname en het Caribisch gebied doorwerkt in het Dordrecht van vandaag.
From Peggy Bouva, a descendant of a family that was enslaved, to Mayor Nanning Mol: each video portrait offers a unique perspective. Sidney Breidel, Glenda van Duivenvoorde, Péris Conrad, Jochem Sprenger, and Delice Abad also share their experiences. Together, these stories make it clear that this past is not far away, but is intertwined with the city in which we live together.
The exhibition is inspired by recent research (2025) on Dordrecht’s history of slavery and the lives of Black residents of Dordrecht. This research was conducted by Dr. Karwan Fatah-Black, Ramona Negrón, Nikita Krouwel, and Rowan van der Stelt, commissioned by the City of Dordrecht.
