Whether you’re looking for culture, creativity, or a culinary surprise, the city is brimming with opportunities to enjoy the sunshine and the new hotspots together!
Have you heard the mussels whispering in the Grote Kerk yet? Sliedrecht-based artist Jelle Korevaar is putting Dordrecht’s city center on edge with his kinetic installation On-eenig. Not a dusty monument, but an interactive wall installation made of 33 mussel shells that literally open and close the moment you raise your voice.
What makes this project special is the combination of high-tech engineering and social impact. Jelle spent a year building his own plastic press to turn old mayonnaise buckets and plant pots into shiny shells. He did this together with people who face barriers to employment, making the project both creative and socially meaningful.
“I want to show that, in a divided world, it’s precisely by continuing to talk and listen that we keep things healthy,” Jelle says about his work. “As soon as things go quiet, we stop moving forward.”
The inside of the mussels is shiny chrome, a nod to the saying “speech is silver, silence is golden.” But in this case, it’s the other way around: your voice brings the art to life. The result is a beautiful, delicate interplay between technology, recycled materials, and the history of the Synod. Step inside the Grote Kerk, make yourself heard, and set the mussels in motion. An absolute must-see for every resident of Dordrecht!
