History of the Buitenlust Water Tower
This water tower, constructed entirely of concrete on the outskirts of the Dubbeldam neighborhood, was built in 1916 based on a design by Visser and Smit of Papendrecht. The hexagonal hipped roof was originally finished with sandstone-colored plaster, achieved by adding ground sandstone. The water tower stands 36.40 meters tall and has a water reservoir capacity of 200 m³. The tower features a 112-step spiral staircase on the exterior, leading up to the observation deck. The water tower has not been used for this purpose since 1973. It subsequently served as a transmission tower for some time. Since its sustainable renovation in 2000, the tower has been open to the public, and from the seventh
floor, you can enjoy the view over the polders toward the Biesbosch.
