About the House of Henegouwen
Originally, the House of Henegouwen had a natural stone facade, which was later plastered and fitted with a cornice. The house spans four window bays. The basement features windows with molded Tudor arches. These cellars were used for the wine trade for centuries. On the side facade facing Gravenstraat, the Gothic entrance with a steps and a modern balcony can be seen. For many years, Huis Henegouwen served as a second residence for the Counts of Holland, who, by granting privileges, laid the foundation for the important status of Holland’s oldest city. It was a pied-à-terre where they would occasionally stay while conducting business, even though they lived elsewhere. Later, a large number of regents lived in Huis Henegouwen. After that, step by step, a slow but clear decline down the social ladder became apparent. No major renovations have taken place here since the early twentieth century. As a result, the building still contains many historically significant details. Today, it houses the Galerie Kunst & Vorm.
