City Walk – Dordrecht Like a Local

Knolhaven, harbor, downtown, city life, Dordrecht, fall

Welcome to Dordrecht! Today, you won't be exploring the city through a tourist's eyes, but the way the locals do: strolling around, sipping coffee and, every now and then, with a bag full of lovely finds from a local business. We’ll walk down the longest shopping street in the Netherlands: the Voorstraat. A lively thoroughfare full of coffee shops, boutiques, galleries, and surprising hidden gems. Along the way, you’ll also soak up a good dose of history—because, hey, this is Dordrecht, and here, history is around every corner.

Vreekens Seeds: Shopping for Garden Plants on Voorstraat West in the Spring District of Dordrecht (2)

Starting Point – Voorstraat West (Leuvebrug)

1 Lange Geldersekade

We’ll start at the Leuvebrug. Ahead of you lies the Voorstraat: over 1,200 meters long, making it officially the longest shopping street in the Netherlands. What you might not realize is that this was once just a dike built to keep the city dry. Pretty clever, combining commerce with flood control, isn’t it?

Here are a few highlights:

  • Vreeken’s Seeds – the go-to place for anyone with a green thumb since 1926. Here you’ll find more seeds than you could ever plant in your garden.
  • A Piece of Cake – a cozy little coffee shop where the cappuccino is fantastic, and kids have plenty of space to play.
  • Café de Lachende Monnik – beer, jenever, and a generous helping of Dordrecht hospitality.
  • Couple’s Café – It hasn’t been open very long, but it’s already a favorite. Tip: Try the matcha. Seriously.
  • Foodnerd – delicacies, sandwiches, and everything that makes you happy on the go.
  • Grandpa and An – a mini department store full of sustainable gifts and home accessories. Just a little different—and that’s exactly the point.

Helena Lunchroom: hidden terrace, food and drinks, Wijnbrug, Voorstraathaven, water, summer, Dordrecht (2)

Voorstraat Central and North

1 Torenstraat

Head to Voorstraat Midden and Noord. There’s a creative vibe here—a bit quirky. Think galleries, designers, and studios in historic buildings that have been around for centuries. Behind the facades lies a beautiful blend of old and new: history and modern entrepreneurship.

What you definitely shouldn't miss here:

  • City Center – a brasserie with a terrace. The perfect spot to watch the Dordrecht parade go by.
  • Samen Bakery – you can smell the bread even before you walk in. And the cinnamon rolls… dangerously delicious.
  • Bluebirds in the Backyard – plants, vintage items, and a café all in one. Across the street, there’s another cute little shop with gifts.
  • Helena Lunchroom – Enjoy lunch in a cozy, living-room atmosphere, with a touch of nostalgia.
  • Het Magazijn – Art Nouveau building, city garden, drinks, and always lively.
  • Café De Tijd – a true Dordrecht institution, the go-to beer bar in the city center for over 30 years.
  • Atelier Klei & Zij – ceramic jewelry, workshops, and everything handmade.
  • Hazel – a minimalist café for chai latte lovers.
  • The Bookcase – books, LPs, and browsing until you find something special.
  • Sjiek de Friemel – a little antique shop and a household name in Dordrecht and the surrounding area!

Have you explored the entire length of the Netherlands' longest shopping street? Check. Time to keep wandering.

Wijnstraat

We walk into Wijnstraat, one of the oldest streets in Dordrecht. This is where the wealthy merchants who made their fortunes in wine, timber, sugar, and grain once lived. The street is brimming with historic landmarks—more than sixty in total. Be sure to check out: Het Zeepaert (No. 113), the St. Boniface Church (No. 117), This is in Beverenburgh (No. 123) and House De Onbeschaamde (Nos. 125 and 127).

And no, the name Wijnstraat isn't a coincidence: a lot of wine really did pass through the cellars here back in the day. No wonder so many merchants used to stroll happily through the streets here.

Stadshotel Steegoversloot: Christa's—Food, Drinks, Lodging, Spring, Downtown Dordrecht (2)

Steegoversloot and Museumstraat

Museum Street

Cross the Nieuwbrug and look straight ahead: one of the narrowest streets in Dordrecht, the Zakkendragersstraat. Small but charming.

Continue on to the Steegoversloot, where you’ll arrive at the Stadshotel. The perfect place to stay right in the heart of the city—or just to grab some high tea at Christa’s.

Via the Museumstraat you’ll find yourself in a charming square between De Witt and the Kunstkerk. This is where it all comes together: food, culture, and a drink. You can have dinner, catch a movie, or check out free exhibitions. And don’t forget to take a look at Piet Oudolf’s city garden.

Statenplein and Vriesestraat

40 Vriesestraat

On to the Statenplein, the beating heart of Dordrecht. Here you’ll find markets, events, and plenty of shops.

And then the Vriesestraat — cozy, creative, and just a little bit different. Cute boutiques and unique spots. For example:

  • Lott Boutique – fashion and lifestyle items carefully curated.
  • De Inrichterij – an interior design shop that has been inspiring the people of Dordrecht for years.

Fish Bridge and City Hall

Fish bridge

We are approaching the Visbrug, where Voorstraat crosses the Oude Haven. A beautiful view is guaranteed.

There is also a statue of the brothers Johan and Cornelis de Witt, the most famous residents of Dordrecht in the 17th century. The statue, erected in 1918, commemorates their powerful role during the Golden Age.

And take a look at the Dordrecht City Hall. Once a 14th-century merchant’s house, it has been the administrative heart of the city for centuries. Council meetings are still held here today.

Grotekerksbuurt

76 Grotekerksbuurt

The Grotekerksbuurt neighborhood leads you straight to the Grote Kerk, the city’s most iconic landmark. The tower was never finished—typical Dordrecht stubbornness—but you can still climb the 275 steps. The view? Bizarrely beautiful.

This street is also home to Nobel’s. Known for its bread, croissants, and breakfasts, it’s a deli where you can easily fill a bag with treats. A favorite spot for both locals and visitors.

And for the finale: along the waterfront, you'll find Lef and Kade 32, places where old warehouses have been transformed into creative hotspots and restaurants.
