Every month, from 10:00 a.m. to around 1:00 p.m., the KNNV Drechtsteden Urban Nature Working Group conducts a survey of urban nature on and around the Weizigt grounds. Would you like to join us? If so, please sign up with Theo Muusse. Be sure to bring a magnifying glass, a Heukels Flora, or Eggelte’s Field Guide to Dutch Flora, as well as binoculars.
Cities are becoming increasingly important to plants and animals. Many organisms use urban areas as a refuge because their original habitats are disappearing or have been polluted and contaminated.
Plants and animals are migrating to urban areas because there is more food and greater safety there, which can lead to more successful survival and reproduction. In urban areas, some municipalities are also taking more proactive steps to increase biodiversity. Mowing policies are being adjusted, the use of herbicides is being phased out, and flower-rich and species-rich roadside verges are being created. All of these measures are beneficial for the development of a diverse urban natural environment.
For several years now, the KNNV Drechtsteden has been working to gain insight into biodiversity in urban areas. So far, the initiative has focused on Dordrecht, but members in other Drechtsteden municipalities are also interested in mapping urban nature in their areas.
