At the Wereldwijven studio at Voorstraat 178, women from all over the world have been working side by side since 2011. With needle and thread, and with open hearts, they are building a community where cultural diversity, craftsmanship, and personal growth come together.
This mini-exhibition, curated by the Dordrecht Regional Archives, features photographic portraits, video footage, and unique, handmade pillows. Each piece is imbued with the story of the woman who created it. The Wereldwijven—more than 80 women from 27 countries—share their memories, dreams, talents, and the journey they’ve taken to find a new home here in Dordrecht. Some stories stem from circumstances of poverty, conflict, or isolation. Others seek space for freedom and independence. In the studio, the Wereldwijven found not only a place to learn embroidery and sewing, but also to practice Dutch, make friends, and celebrate together.
