From powerful lightning strikes and tornadoes to rare phenomena such as St. Elmo’s fire, red sprites, and perhaps even ball lightning: the atmosphere is full of spectacular phenomena.
During this themed evening on July 25, you’ll discover how these extreme weather phenomena occur, why they tend to happen during certain seasons, and under what conditions you can observe them. We’ll discuss what science knows about them, which phenomena still raise questions, and whether they can be dangerous.
During a themed evening, we offer a program lasting approximately 1.5 hours. The group begins at 6:00 p.m. with a presentation, after which—if conditions permit—there is an opportunity to look through the telescope. You’ll receive an explanation of what you can see. The group is divided into two smaller groups: while one group uses the telescope, the other group enjoys a planetarium show. Afterward, the groups switch places. The themed evenings are open to children ages 6 and up.
