Celebrate Mother's Day in Dordrecht

Articles News

Along the way, you’ll get a taste of Eastern Europe, Morocco, Italy, and Greece without ever leaving Dordrecht. Stroll from shop to shop, fill your bag with treats, and end your stroll by the water at the Maartensgat for that wonderful vacation feeling.

Couple's Cafe: coffee, terrace, couples, food, drinks, summer, downtown Dordrecht

Your day starts here

Before you head into downtown Dordrecht, start with a nice cup of coffee. On Voorstraat, you’ll find Couple’s Café, a cozy spot where you can start your day with a hearty breakfast or a good cup of coffee. The name refers to Boris and Anita, the couple behind the café. But Couple’s Café is open to everyone. It’s precisely the personal attention and warm atmosphere that make many guests feel right at home. Whether you’re stopping by for breakfast, lunch, or a sweet treat with your coffee.

For Anita, it’s ultimately about more than just food and drink. “I want people to escape reality for a while.” With a view of the water, homemade treats, and plenty of time for a good conversation, Couple’s Café is the kind of place where morning slips into afternoon before you even realize it.

Odesa Slavic Specialties Delicatessen Shopping Center, Dordrecht

Let's go on a trip!

After coffee, it’s time to continue strolling through the city center. Anyone who steps inside Odesa is drawn to colorful packaging, surprising flavors, and unfamiliar delicacies. Odesa’s shelves are filled with products from Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, and other Eastern European countries. From pelmeni and unique cheeses to sweet treats, caviar, and Georgian wines: there’s plenty to discover for anyone who loves trying something new.

For owner Ruben Kasparian, it’s about more than just food and drink. “Many people walk in and immediately feel a sense of nostalgia.” The name refers to the Ukrainian port city of Odessa, where different cultures have been coming together for centuries. That connection is reflected in both the products and the people who visit. As a result, a visit to Odesa feels like a mini-trip through Eastern Europe.

La Venezia Ice Cream, Spuihaven, Vriesebrug, Summer, Downtown Dordrecht

A Little Vacation

After a stroll through downtown, it’s time for a refreshing break. And where better to do that than at La Venezia! On sunny days, the place is bustling with activity. Kids are coming home from school, friends are finding a table on the patio, and families are grabbing ice cream to go. With a view of the water, it sometimes feels as if you’ve stepped into an Italian piazza.

The family behind La Venezia has been making ice cream according to Italian tradition for generations. “We want people to enjoy high-quality products and a pleasant moment together,” says Cristina Gervasio. From creamy pistachio ice cream to refreshing fruit flavors: every scoop brings a touch of Italy with it.

Ma Baker Delicatessen, Food and Drink Center, Dordrecht

A Delicious Stopover

The aroma of freshly baked Moroccan specialties greets you even before you step inside Ma Baker. Behind the counter, you’ll find delicious (Moroccan) sandwiches, Msemens, rice dishes, sweet treats, and other specialties that are attracting more and more residents of Dordrecht. On hot summer days, the Moroccan smoothies are also popular. Perfect for enjoying on the go during a day of strolling through the city center.

The clear favorite? The msemen. This traditional Moroccan pancake is prepared layer by layer and comes in a variety of flavors. Choose the classic version with butter and honey, or go for a generously filled msemen with, for example, chicken, ground meat, vegetables, or spinach. Owner Zine el Abidine says, “People are curious and enjoy trying something new.”

Balkan and Greek Delicatessen Shopping Couple Downtown Dordrecht

A little piece of Greece right near home

Some stores make you forget for a moment that you’re in Dordrecht. Balkan Greek Delicatessen is one of them. It’s the place to go for lovers of Greek cuisine. Many customers are familiar with the flavors from their vacations in Greece and stop by specifically for baklava, olives, feta, or a bottle of Greek olive oil.

Owner Dirk Mumin opened the store less than a year ago. Now, you can go there not only for authentic products, but also for a fresh lunch or meal. Think pita gyros, souvlaki, and other Greek specialties. “I started with a few tables and some Greek pastries. Now it’s actually turned into a small Greek grocery store.” Whether you sit down for a cup of coffee with something sweet or take a treat home with you, one thing is certain: at Balkan Greek Delicatessen, you’ll get a taste of Greece.

New Harbor, Grote Kerk, picnic, couple, summer vacation, Dordrecht

Tip: Have a picnic by the water

Is your backpack full of treats? Then head over to the Maartensgat, near the Mazelaarsbrug. Here you’ll find a lovely spot in Dordrecht to settle down by the water. Find a spot in the sun, break out your sandwiches, sweets, and all your treats, and take in the view of the historic harbors and boats passing by. For a moment, it’ll feel like you’re on vacation—right in the heart of Dordrecht!
