Marianne Farrère (Isabelle Huppert) seems to have it all: a lavish estate, a prestigious inheritance, and a life of luxury free from financial worries. Yet the successful businesswoman feels increasingly unhappy—tormented by boredom, the ailments of old age, and the emptiness behind her public image. When the young, charismatic photographer Pierre-Alain (Laurent Lafitte) takes her portrait, an intense, platonic friendship unexpectedly blossoms. Marianne rediscovers her zest for life and showers him with her wealth. Their affair soon becomes the subject of speculation and tension within the family.
This tragicomedy by Thierry Klifais loosely based on real events. LilianeBettencourt, heiress to the L’Oréal empire, caused quite a stir in 2010 with a love affair. It is both a modern and a classic story about power, family drama, secrets, and corruption reaching all the way to the highest echelons of French politics.
