Single mother Shu-Fen and her two daughters—teenager I-Ann and five-year-old I-Jing—return to Taipei after living in the countryside for years. All three of them face quite a few challenges there. For one thing, Shu-Fen has to clean up the mess her ex left behind, all while working herself to the bone at a food stall in the big night market. I-Ann wants to stand on her own two feet, but keeps making the wrong decisions. And her left-handed daughter, I-Jing, is told by her traditional grandfather that she must never use that “devil’s hand” again. Mischievously, she defies that command. This sets off a chain of events in which three generations of family secrets suddenly begin to unravel.
For twenty years, this film story—drawn from directorShih-Ching Tsou’sown childhood as a left-hander—simmered in her mind. Itis vividly brought to life using nothing more than an iPhone camera.
