You’ve probably been there. You have a day off, you’re in the mood to get out and about, but you haven’t a clue where to go… In that case, Dordrecht is a surprisingly fun choice. This historic city is full of charm and packed with shops and restaurants that are worth exploring. Whether you’re coming by car or taking the train, downtown Dordrecht is conveniently close. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the station into the city. We’ll take you on a 24-hour tour of Dordrecht: from morning coffee to a good glass of wine at the end of the day.

A leisurely start in the city center

We start the day at City Bakery Café 38 on Nieuwstraat. It’s a modern bakery with great coffee, fresh bread, and a relaxed atmosphere. The tables slowly fill up with locals on their way to work and day-trippers exploring the city. No matter when you go—on a weekday or on the weekend—you can feel the city coming to life!

After breakfast, it’s time to really explore the city. The Grote Kerk is a good place to start. Take a look inside or stroll through the surrounding streets. The Grotekerksbuurt and Vleeshouwersstraat are full of small boutiques, antique shops, and studios. It has a cozy, almost village-like feel—but right in the heart of a historic city. Please note! The Grote Kerk is only open on Saturdays during the winter.

Shopping with Local Charm

Well-known brands and local businesses line the streets of Dordrecht’s downtown. Voorstraat is the longest shopping street in the Netherlands, but it feels anything but ordinary. We’ll start at Bluebirds in the Backyard. It’s a place where you can shop, have lunch, and just browse at your leisure. Think vintage clothing, sustainable brands, and fun home accessories. Then we’ll walk on to Het Magazijn, a creative space where fashion, art, and dining come together. That way, you’ll have gotten a taste of all the different atmospheres in just one morning!

Need a quick break? You'll find coffee shops all over the city where you can enjoy a cup of coffee with a treat.

Time to eat

It’s always fun and delicious to have lunch out. Luckily, Dordrecht’s downtown has plenty of cozy lunch spots to choose from. So around lunchtime, we head to the harbor. Dordrecht has several places where you can eat with a view of the water, and Finn’s on the Wijnhaven is a great example. Here, you can enjoy a well-filled sandwich or a warm bowl of soup while watching the boats glide peacefully by. It’s a lovely spot to take a break and soak up the city’s atmosphere.

Explore the city at your own pace

We’re walking toward the old harbors—the most beautiful part of Dordrecht, if you ask us. Here you’ll see historic architecture, small bridges, and ships that capture the atmosphere of days gone by. It’s not called the “Venice of the North” for nothing. When the weather is nice, a boat tour is a fun way to see Dordrecht from a different perspective. The boat takes you past the most beautiful spots, and along the way, you’ll learn more about the city’s history.

Would you rather stay indoors? Then the Dordrechts Museum is definitely worth a visit. It’s a quiet museum with a beautiful collection of paintings by Dutch artists, ranging from the 17th century to the present. Did you know that Dordrecht is the oldest city in the Netherlands? So there’s plenty of history to discover!

Drinks in a cozy atmosphere

After an afternoon of strolling around, it’s time for something fun. We take a seat at Post, located in the old post office. The high ceilings and large windows give the building its character, and the menu is exactly what you want: great bar snacks and a wide selection of drinks.

Would you rather stay outside a little longer? At Brasserie Down Town, you can enjoy a snack and a drink on the patio on those beautiful fall and winter days. With heaters, a blanket, and a cup of hot tea, you’ll have a beautiful view of the water.

Great food, wonderful atmosphere

Dordrecht has plenty of restaurants to choose from, but a few really stand out. Villa Augustus is one of them. It’s located in an old water tower, with a restaurant right in the middle of the garden. The dishes are seasonal, and much of the produce comes from their own vegetable garden! Or, to keep that “Venice of the North” vibe going, dinner at Piccola Italia is a great idea. It’s a cozy Italian restaurant where the pizzas and pastas are always fresh and flavorful.

After dinner, the city is still bustling. Café Merz and Dolhuis often feature live music and have a relaxed atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to end the day with one last drink.

The next morning, you can wake up at your own pace, take a short stroll through the city, or grab breakfast somewhere before heading home.

In 24 hours, you’ll discover that Dordrecht is just big enough to explore, but small enough to see everything on foot. The combination of shops, restaurants, history, and water makes it an ideal city for a day trip.

Whether you're visiting with friends, your partner, or just on your own, Dordrecht is a city that feels charming, friendly, surprising, and above all, very welcoming!
