The Central Station consists of two monumental parts: the station building and the canopy. With the construction of the railway bridges over the major rivers in 1872, the Moerdijk Bridge and Zwijndrecht Bridge, Dordrecht was included in the railway network and the desired connection between Rotterdam and Antwerp came about. At the time, the station stood on Dubbeldam territory, now a district of Dordrecht. It was built by order of the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg Maatschappij. The station building, standing parallel to the track, is 108 metres long and was built as a so-called Waterstaatstation 1st class, of which only two were built. Only two of these were built, the other being in Zwolle. The station may have been designed by building and mechanical engineer K.H. van Brederode as well as by architect N.J. Kamperdijk, who provided designs for several stations at the time. The interior of the station building has been partly preserved in its original state. The hall is wide but shallow, and is provided with daylight by 18 wall openings. The platform roofing was made in 1900 by the Dordrecht firm Van Dorsser & Terhorst and is a steel supporting structure of riveted and rolled iron with a wooden saddleback roof on top. In 2011, the station was rebuilt, with the entrance at the bus stops being provided with a new roof. The commercial areas were also rebuilt and the ticket machines moved. The fixed stairs were replaced by escalators and the front steps were renewed.
