Year of construction: 1516

  • Style of construction: Gothic
  • Original function: presbytery

The building De Gulden Os dates from 1516 and has a gothic stepped gable in natural stone from ca. 1525. This shows many similarities to the facade of the oldest house in Dordrecht, 't Zeepaert 63 on Wijnstraat 113. In the early sixteenth century, the building bore the name 'Het Vlies'. After the renovation around 1525, the house was called 'De Gulden Os', probably because of the adjacent Vleeshouwersstraat, where many butchers were located. Later, this building housed a meat hall and was long used as a café-restaurant Américain. After a period of vacancy, it was rebuilt and restored in 1986. On the stepped gable you can see an ornament of a resting golden ox, which was probably added during this restoration, it does not appear in earlier photos. Merged with another medieval building and supplemented with modern new construction, it forms the current home of the Stadsbibliotheek Dordrecht, main branch of De Bibliotheek AanZet.
