Product description

Like well-kept secrets, the courtyards are somewhat hidden in the city. Passers-by do not enter without hesitation, afraid to invade the privacy of the residents. After they had proved their worth for years, almshouses were out of fashion for a long time.

Backlogs in maintenance, lack of money and urban renewal operations have led to the demise of many almshouses. Often it was the oldest that survived. The hofjes are now being revalued.

Marcel Sluijter focuses on seven existing hofjes, such as the oldest hofje still existing from 1519: the Van Slingelandtshof. But the Regenten- or Lenghenhof and the Hallinqhof are also discussed. The booklet also contains interviews with some residents and regents of almshouses in Dordrecht.
