Was it not in Dordrecht that, in 1572, the States of Holland decided to resist Spanish rule and proclaimed Prince William of Orange stadholder of Holland? From that time onwards, stadholders, princes, kings and queens of the house of Orange-Nassau have shown an interest in Dordrecht, right up to the present day.
