Add to favorites
Sat May 10, 2025
20:00 - 21:05

Concert by the Agathe Ensemble, consisting of 8 strings. The program will include "Scenes of a Folk Life," featuring folk music from the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. Originally written for piano, these works have been arranged for strings by the musicians themselves and will be part of Agathe's second studio album, to be released in 2026.

When the young pianist and composer Julius Röntgen moved from Germany to the Netherlands in 1877, he quickly became an active part of local cultural life. He was particularly attracted to Dutch folk music and through its songs and dances he gained insight into the country's traditions, daily life and folk character. This music became an enduring source of inspiration in his compositions.

Like his close friend Edvard Grieg of Norway and his partner Amanda Maier of Sweden, Röntgen devoted his life to collecting and studying folk melodies. Folk music captures the essence of a people - simple yet profound, rooted in tradition yet timeless in beauty.

Program: Julius Röntgen: - Old Dutch Peasant Songs and Contra Dances - Scenes from Dutch Folk Life, Op. 81 Amanda Maier: - Swedish melodies and dances, Op. 6 Edvard Grieg: - 4 Norwegian dances, Op. 35 - Scenes from rural life, Op. 19 "Folk melodies are true musical art.
