On Saturday, March 8, on International Women's Day, Meliange Comenencia's new exhibition Balansa opens in the CECD. With Balansa, Meliange wants to encourage the public to reflect on their own position and identity. You are cordially invited to attend this opening.
Balansa
"Balansa" by Meliange Comenencia explores themes of stasis, loneliness and the search for one's own identity in an environment heavily influenced by culture, family and faith. Through five self-portraits, Meliange tells the story of the search for liberation and invisibility. It highlights the "transitional phase" when one realizes that it is time to choose for oneself and determine which values and norms are important to one's personal identity. Personal stories from her own diary are combined with inspiration from the colors and memories she has of nature in Curaçao.
Meliange Comenencia
Meliange is a storyteller, maker and dreamer raised in Rotterdam with Curaçao roots. With her background in Fashion Design and Cultural Studies, she combines both philosophical and social issues in her work. Vulnerability, history and healing are central to her artistic work. She does this by using her personal stories.
The message is to be Vocal In Color. The unashamed presence of minorities in a society. These are the feelings and experiences Meliange knows and, incorporates into her work, hoping to spark a thought in people who may or may not identify with her embodied knowledge as a person of color living in a Western society.
Admission is free.
CECD is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
