Benjamin Herman presents his album 'Nostalgia Blitz'. Saxophonist and musical all-rounder Benjamin Herman will perform at Muziekpodium DJS on May 17. For over thirty years Herman has been among the most prolific musicians of his generation. Since the 1990s he has played worldwide and released more than fifty albums with his band New Cool Collective and as a solo artist. His oeuvre covers a broad spectrum: from traditional jazz and punk jazz to film music and postmodern interpretations of the work of composer Misha Mengelberg.
On his album "Nostalgia Blitz," Herman continues his search for a recognizable and personal saxophone sound. This album delves into the music that fascinated him as a youngster. For the recordings, he locked himself in the studio of Simon Akkermans (C-mon & Kypski) and worked with an eclectic mix of musicians from various genres and corners of the world.
A special element on the album is the contribution of British punk poet John Cooper Clarke, with an ode to Jules Deelder.
"Nostalgia Blitz" is an explosion of ideas and influences, rooted in the alternative saxophone universe of Herman's youth. "When I started making music in 1980, the saxophone was the hippest instrument in the world. Saxophonists such as James Chance, John Lurie, Xero Slingsby, and of course Hans Dulfer, inspired me with their idiosyncratic approach: atonal disco, conceptual art jazz, punk jazz. Music that was about ideas and energy, more than technical perfection," Herman said.
With "Nostalgia Blitz," he once again explores the limits of his playing and pays tribute to his childhood heroes.
