On Wednesday, June 4, Gemeente Dordrecht is organizing a book presentation on the recently published research into the role of Dordrecht in transatlantic slavery. "Dordrecht, slavery and autonomy from 1572 to the present" she ds new light on this history and its impact in the present.
With archival research, personal stories and critical reflection on the past, this book is an invitation to conversation, recognition and justice. The research was commissioned by the Municipality of Dordrecht.
Researchers involved:
- Karwan Fatah-Black: associate professor at Leiden University specializing in the history of slavery and emancipation.
- Ramona Negrón: postdoctoral fellow at KITLV, where she researches the transition from slavery to citizenship in the Dutch Caribbean. She received her PhD from Leiden University in 2025 and specializes in colonial, maritime and slavery history.
- Nikita Krouwel: focuses on histories of the African diaspora as an independent researcher and program maker.
- Rowan van der Stelt: focuses on the history of transatlantic slavery and family research as a historian and independent researcher.
Panel discussion
The evening will be presented and moderated by city poet and companion committee member Swendeline Ersilia. Following the book presentation, there will be a panel discussion in which the researchers will respond to the book and the themes it touches on from their own perspectives. There will also be room for questions from the audience. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to obtain the book.
