Sun Apr. 13, 2025 - Sun Sep. 21, 2025

From April 13 to September 21, 2025, the Dordrecht Museum will host the exhibition Carel de Nerée. Different from the Others. The oeuvre of Carel de Nerée tot Babberich (1880-1909) is characterized as one of the most intriguing in Dutch art around 1900. His sophisticated drawings, such as The Swans and Extaze: After the Sacrifice, evoke associations with the work of great European fin-de-siècle artists such as Aubrey Beardsley, Gustav Klimt and Jan Toorop.

Coming from a prominent family, De Nerée was both a society figure and a bohemian artist. His life and work reflected themes of queerness, gender fluidity and eroticism. Despite his diplomatic ambitions, he found an intimate outlet in art, with drawings that not only possess an aesthetic beauty but also reveal his complex life story.

The exhibition features more than 40 masterpieces from Dutch and international collections, including works never before exhibited. Also on display is beautiful embroidery created in collaboration with his mother, Constance van Houten. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to discover De Nerée's innovative vision and exceptional talent. The exhibition is curated in collaboration with guest curator Sander Bink, who is also preparing the first full-fledged biography of De Nerée.

Please note! The museum is closed on Mondays.
