The Dordrechts Museum proudly presents two life-size works by Charlotte Schleiffert. Her powerful figures – extravagant, activist appearances – seem to have stepped straight off the catwalk. Dressed in a mix of fashion, folklore and punk, they symbolize freedom, equality and respect for nature and culture worldwide.
Charlotte Schleiffert has been travelling the world since graduating, from Italy to South America, Indonesia and China. This global perspective is reflected in her work: a visual collage of times and cultures, in which her figures – not always satisfied with their existence – dream of another world. In addition to the already acquired work What Kind of Leader do we need? (2014), the museum now also welcomes Protecting the city (2024): a brand new acquisition. The first shows a spiritual leader who rejects classical images of power; the second redefines the role of the muse as a patroness of the city and culture, against a backdrop of climate change.
"I want to create a mix of times and locations. My figures are not always happy with their lives and dream of an alternative. They embody the desire for another world," says Schleiffert about their activist appearance.
Both purchases were made possible with support from the Mondriaan Fund.
