In the exhibition “Legacy of Dignity,” we share how generations before us, despite everything, preserved their families, communities, rich cultural traditions, and their own value systems.Through stories, local archives, and historical sources, we show that our ancestors were more than just their suffering: they were active individuals who left a lasting legacy. What connects us is the strength of what we have built and passed down from generation to generation.
Even there, where freedom was not a given, we retained our own way of life. From traditions and cultural transmission to economic and legal self-organization, “Legacy of Dignity” contributes to a broader awareness of Dordrecht’s history of slavery. But above all, we celebrate the humanity, resilience, and enduring legacy of enslaved people and their communities.
