Japanese master's epic film classics enrich summer film program

Akira Kurosawa (1910-1998) is still considered one of Japan's greatest filmmakers. After more than 30 years, his best-known films are returning to the big screen. Eye Filmmuseum is distributing them - partly digitally restored - this summer, including to Dordrecht. Kurosawa's epic films always blend Japanese history and culture with literary and cinematic influences from the West. In doing so, he emphasizes the good in man.
Many famous film directors name his works as important sources of inspiration. George Lucas used them in his Star Wars series. Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood made a remake of hisYojimbo with A Fistfull of Dollars. And without Kurosawa, there would have been no Lord of the Rings .
