When young and ambitious ballerina Joy Womack ( Talia Ryder ) is accepted into the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow, she becomes the first American student at this renowned dance academy. Joy's dream is to become a prima ballerina at this prestigious ballet. But behind the beauty of dance lies a world of pain and fierce competition. During her training, Joy is forced to push her physical and mental boundaries. In a toxic relationship with her teacher Tatyana Volkova ( Diana Krüger ), she hopes to achieve her dream despite all the trials. But will an American be accepted in the traditional Russian dance world?

Director James Napier Robertson based his film on a true story/person. The real Joy Womack collaborated extensively in the realization of the film.
