On SO 29/06 De Witt together with Stg Indisch Dordrecht presents an Indian afternoon around this film. Filmmaker Hetty Naaijkens will be present for a Q&A after the film. The atmosphere will be musically enhanced by Disco Pedis. And Toko Yvon will serve delicious lempers and spring rolls (included in the ticket price). This kicks off the screening period of ANAK INDIË in Dordrecht.
The Netherlands has more than two million people with roots in the former Dutch East Indies. Of these, more than 300,000 were forcibly repatriated to the Netherlands after World War II. For Dutch East Indies, Moluccan families and Peranakan Chinese, it meant a new beginning in a country that did not always welcome them with open arms.
Through collage animations, music, 8mm archival footage and personal stories of well-known Dutch East Indies people, such as Yvonne Keuls, Adriaan van Dis and Wieteke van Dort, the film shows how they had to build a new existence. Many of them very successfully.
Filmmaker Hetty Naaijkens-Retel Helmrich illustrates their stories with typical intangible heritage: from the Indian rice table to music, from visual culture to the Nijmegen Four-Day Walk. Anak India is a film about resilience, identity and a shared past; a past that is still palpable and visible in today's Netherlands.
2:30 p.m. Walk-in while Disco Pedis plays Indian vinyl.
