Photographer Ruud Baan is currently exhibiting his work in the KunstKerk. At his request, we are putting on the big screen a documentary film by David Lachapelle: RIZE. Ruud admires this American colleague and sees him as an inspiration. After the film there will be a personal talk with Ruud Baan
RIZE from 2005 is an intimate and contemporary portrait of young people in American inner cities. Fashion photographer and clip director David Lachapelle introduces us to the phenomenon of krumping, a hyper-energetic dance form in which combat, clown-mime and African tribal dance meet. At the center of the show is former drug dealer Tommy Johnson. In response to the Rodney King riots in 1992, he creates the character Tommy the Clown to liven up street parties and neighborhood events. Tommy is popular and neighborhood kids join him. The rapidly growing group forms into a kind of family, something they hardly had before. They develop their creative expression, including krumping. Dance battles arise in parking lots, sports halls fill with frenzied crowds. Drug addiction, poverty and gang violence give way to connection and art. With a great sense of color and rhythm, Lachapelle portrays this community and their exhilarating dance.
Start: 8:30 p.m., with a brief introduction. The film lasts 84 minutes (English subtitles) . Followed by a conversation with Ruud Baan. End: approx. 22:30, time for a drink in the Stadsbrasserie. Tickets cost € 10 and can be ordered online via the button Times & Tickets.
