The town of Sollerod is plagued by a motley group of newcomers. They pop up in all sorts of places, pretending to be mentally handicapped. By letting their "inner idiot" do the talking, they want to create a better world. Within the group, Stoffer (Jens Albinus) establishes himself as a power-hungry leader. He challenges the others to take their sexual and psychological experiments to the extreme. Is the group willing to follow Stoffer and, in doing so, break with their old lives forever?
Director Lars von Trier is considered a great rebel among European film makers, a reputation that was shaped in part with this film.
