Many billions in taxpayers' money flow to an industry that mistreats animals, pollutes the environment and fuels possible future pandemics. These are probing confrontations with farmers, corporations and policymakers; economic interests trump public health, sustainability and ethics. International experts make clear how the industry's impact extends beyond animal welfare: from water pollution and antibiotic resistance to the exploitation of migrant workers and the loss of biodiversity.
