A divorce drama that works like a mirror.
Director: Lilja Ingolfsdottir (Like a Flamingo) - Actors: including Helga Guren, Odgeir Thune, Elisabeth Sand
Length: 104 minutes - Language: Norwegian
- Subtitles: Dutch
VPRO Cinema: "...a beautifully nuanced tone and clever acting."
It all started so beautifully, but the relationship of Maria(Helga Guren) and her second husband Sigmund(Odgeir Thune) is not what it used to be. Maria feels a great imbalance with her husband in the relationship between work and caring for their family. Sigmund feels trapped by a frustrated wife. After a number of arguments and conversations, which are awkward and unsatisfactory, the idea of divorce is broached. The painful question arises: what went wrong?
Thus described, the film looks like yet another divorce drama. But what director Lilja Ingolfsdottir portrays quite distinctively is the confrontational "soul-searching" Maria undertakes to break the behavioral patterns that led to the separation.... And now let's hope that a film follows that puts Sigmund's perspective at the center.
