Faithful: "...wonderful Italian family chronicle.... director Delpero is an asset to Italian cinema."
1944, the war is coming to an end. In Vermiglio, a mountain village high in the Italian Alps, all is quiet. The arrival of Pietro(Guiseppe De Domenico), a deserted Sicilian soldier, disturbs that peace. Especially that within the teacher's family, because Lucia, the eldest daughter, is very much attracted to the stranger. In the four seasons that follow, we see how the thick layer of snow melts, love blossoms and peace spreads across Italy. But as the world slowly emerges from the tragedy of war, the family faces its own tragedy.
Director Maura Delpero drew on her own family history for this film story, loosely modeling the village schoolteacher after her grandfather. Vermiglio is a gripping family chronicle, with those (snow-covered) mountains reminding residents every day how puny humans are. Awarded the Silver Lion, the grand jury prize, at the Venice Film Festival.
