The energy of musical theater is incorporated into sensual contemporary ballet in four different short works: Fool's Paradise, The Two of Us, Us and An American in Paris. These four works showcase the immense choreographic talent of The Royal Ballet's Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon.
The luminous and glittering Fool's Paradise was the first of Wheeldon's many collaborations with composer Joby Talbot.
The Two of Us floats beautifully on the wistful songs of Joni Mitchell; a duet of deep intimacy and longing.
Us is a tender duet, danced by two men to music by Keaten Henson.
An American in Paris is Wheeldon's ballet in the Tony Award-winning musical. The musical features the jazzy melodies of Gershwin and it is inspired by the 1951 film of the same name in which Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron dance through the streets of Paris. The blossoming love between American G.I. Jerry Mulligan and a French ballerina, Lise Dassin culminates with this, An unforgettable scene from the film is now brought to the stage.
