Director Guillaume Nicloux delved into the life of famous French actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923), Charismatic, driven and internationally successful, she is considered the first true world star/celebrity. He concluded that "her life is a whirlwind. That can never be captured in a faithful biographical film story. So he took two key moments from her life to portray an intense woman.
1915, Sarah(Sandrine Kiberlain) is in the hospital because her right leg needs to be removed. Her loved ones appear at her bedside.
Paris, 1896. Sarah is at the height of her fame and her friends and admirers have planned a big party because to celebrate.
From both moments, we get to know an intense woman. Her voice and appearance enchant. She has become ambitious, wealthy, insufferably manipulative, crazy and generous. With her independent thinking and free spirit regarding relationships, she defies the conventions of her era. Between reality and myth, a portrait of a diva unfolds, with also a great love: the actor Lucien Guitry(Laurent Lafitte).
