Sonny Hayes ( Brad Pitt ) was named the most promising Formula 1 driver in the 1990s. But an accident almost ended his career. Thirty years later, he is a traveling driver who hires himself out for races. He is approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes ( Javier Bardem ), now the owner of a struggling F1 team. Ruben convinces Sonny to return to Formula 1 and thus seizes a last chance to avert bankruptcy. Sonny himself gets the last chance to become the best in the world for once. His teammate is Joshua Pearce ( Damson Idris ), the talented rookie who is determined to become the fastest himself. Once the engines start roaring, Sonny is haunted by his past. Moreover, it turns out that in F1 your teammate can be your biggest competitor. He can't get back on his feet on his own. What can?
