George Bailey (James Steward) is a goody two-shoes trying to prop up an ailing bank in an American provincial town. Unfortunate machinations of his business partner have brought him to the brink of financial ruin. Things are also going badly physically While everyone around him is gearing up for a "happy & wonderful Xmas," Bailey is on the verge of losing control of himself. Fortunately, there is the intervention of the guardian angel Clarence, who has descended to earth. He shows Bailey what the town would have looked like if he hadn't been there.
The glorious director Frank Capra and James Steward, the Hollywood star par excellence at the time, made this film the crowning achievement of their collaboration. It contains all the ingredients of a (Christmas) classic melodrama in its Hollywoods style. The restored film image in contrasting black and white splashes from the big screen.
