In his well-known colorful and empathetic way, Spanish great Pedro Almodóvar created an intimate drama about aging, living and dying that centers on the power of friendship.
Ingrid(Julianne Moore) is a successful writer who discovers that an old friend Martha(Tilda Swinton) is ill. They had lost track of each other, but the two immediately find each other again as they reminisce together about the life they once shared. When Martha's health declines, she asks Ingrid to support her through her self-directed end. They leave New York and move to a beautiful villa just outside the city. Surrounded by nature and with their shared passion for art, they celebrate life while they still can. And they prepare for the risks of a self-directed end of life.
The Room Next Door recently won the prestigious Golden Lion for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival. The serious and sad subject takes on a lightness and delicacy thanks to the beauty of the camera work and the almost natural acting of the two top actresses.
