Synopsis
The peasant girl Giselle has fallen in love with Albrecht. When she learns that he is actually a man
of nobility and already engaged to someone else, she commits suicide in her despair. Her spirit
ends up with the Wilis: the vengeful spirits of women bent on killing every man they
encounter to bring in a dance to death. Plagued by regret, Albrecht visits
Giselles grave, where he must face the Wilis and Giselles spirit.
Peter Wrights' 1985 production of this typically romantic ballet is a classic of the
repertoire of The Royal Ballet. With the sensitive music of Adolphe Adam and the atmospheric
designs by John Macfarlane, Giselle evokes the earthly and otherworldly worlds in a story
Of love, betrayal and redemption.
